Ask most principals how much of their week goes to decisions that weren't really theirs to make, and they'll guess ten, maybe fifteen percent. Track it for real, and the number is usually closer to a third — small approvals, minor calls, things a coordinator could have made alone, quietly routed to you out of habit, not necessity.
None of it feels like a problem. It feels like being needed.
The last villain, and the hardest one to see
Every gap so far has lived in someone else — a parent, a teacher, a family, your board. This one lives in you, which is exactly why it's the one principals miss longest. Being the final check on everything looks identical to strong leadership, right up until a leave, a transition, or one unavailable week reveals how much of the school was never actually delegated. Only deferred, quietly, to you.
Being needed for everything doesn't mean you've built something strong. It can just as easily mean nothing was ever built to run without you.
